For example, one of our clients was convinced its turnover was caused by a lack of employee motivation and commitment. 
Our research uncovered that employees wanted to stay at the company but saw no career opportunities there.  While management insisted there were job grades up the career ladder, the employees had never seen it happen.  In order to change this perception, the company needed to demonstrate that it was possible for employees to advance their careers at the company.

Senior management often overlooks the importance of retention.  “We’re at industry standard,” they tell us, or “Turnover is a normal cost of doing business.”  Imagine the gardener who allowed weeds to grow in her garden because they are normal.  Yes, weeds are part of nature, but we can’t let them grow unchecked if they threaten our harvest.

We worked with a company that wouldn’t acknowledge turnover as a problem, even though it was costing the company 10 percent of its gross revenue.  Once we demonstrated the true costs of turnover to senior management and offered solutions for managing retention, the company began to address the problem and see improvement.
